Annie's Rodents

As with rats, there are many places that sell mice. Here are a few:
Pet stores: Most pet stores sell mice. Sometimes they will sell them under the
label "fancy mice" or "feeder mice". There is absolutely NO difference between a
fancy mouse and a feeder mouse. Pet stores are not generally the best place to
buy a good pet mouse. Mice at pet stores are generally sold as "snake food" and
are not handled or socialized. Many pet stores will keep the males and females
together in one tank, so if you buy a female mouse, she will most likely be
pregnant.
Prices are pet stores can range from $2.00 - $5.00.
Mouse breeders: Just as there are dog and cat breeders, there are also mouse
breeders. A mouse breeder is one of the best places to find a good,
well-socialized pet mouse. A quick search on the internet will provide you with a
list of "mouseries" who will be happy to help you find your perfect mouse. Mice
born in a mousery are usually handled often to help socialize them.
Some mouse breeders are called "feeder breeders", which means they raise
mice primarily as food for other animals. "Feeder breeders" are not liked by
"fancy" mouse breeders. There are also breeders who breed for both food and
pets. These breeders aren't all that common.
Prices from a breeder can range from $1.00 - $15.00 or more.
Small animal rescues: Most cities have a pound, SPCA, or small animal rescue
with a variety of small pets available for adoption. Mice are usually kept in "foster
homes" until they are adopted out. Foster mice are usually handled often to help
socialize them for a new home.
Prices at small animal rescues vary from rescue to rescue, so it's best to contact
your local rescue for more information.
Newspaper or online ads: There are many newspapers and online ads which
have a section for pets for sale.
Prices can range from free to $5.00.
