Annie's Rodents

Time for bedding
There are a variety of different substrates, also known as bedding, you can use for
your mice. Some are good and some are bad. Here's a list of some of the
common beddings available for your pets:
Cedar or pine shavings: These shavings should be avoided completely. They
are NOT healthy for your pet and can cause serious health problems such as
respiratory illness, severe liver damage, cancer, and even an early death. Did you
know the oil that make pine shavings smell so good is the same ingredient that is
found in Pine Sol? Definitely not a healthy bedding choice for your pet mice.
Aspen shavings: Aspen shavings are a great bedding choice. Aspen can be
found in most pet supply stores for a fairly reasonable price. Aspen will absorb
urine and also help keep odours down.
Pelleted bedding/litter: This is a great bedding material that is usually made from
recycled paper or aspen bark and is completely safe. It absorbs urine and helps
keep any odour down.
Cat litter or sand: Some people chose to use clumping cat litter or sand, but this
is not a good idea. It may be eaten unintentionally and cause serious health
problems.
Hay: Grass or alfalfa hay is a good bedding choice, though it doesn't keep the
odour down and can be messy. Mice love chewing on it and it does make a nice
nesting material.
Corn cob bedding: Corn cob bedding isn't really recommended for bedding for
rodents as some mice may try to eat some and it could get stuck in their throats.
It's best to stay away from this type of bedding.
