Annie's Rodents

How are you going to house your mouse?
Mice are natural escape artists and most wire cages are not designed to keep
mice. So, what are your options?
Wire cages: As mentioned, wire hamster cages are not suitable for mice. The
spacing between the bars is too wide and most mice can squeeze their way out of
them the moment your back is turned. Some pet stores now carry a "mouse cage"
which is suitable for mice, but they can be quite expensive and are not the easiest
to keep clean.
Aquariums: An old aquarium with a tight fitting lid is the perfect mouse house. A
small 10 gallon tank can keep several mice quite comfortably and still have room
for some toys as well. Tanks are fairly easy to keep clean and as long as you
have a good lid, are virtually escape proof. The downfall of aquariums is that they
don't have good ventilation.
Plastic bins: Many people keep their mice in small, clear plastic storage bins.
These bins are very easy to keep clean and a small, shoe-box sized bin can hold
two mice comfortably. You can cut the center of the lid out and insert a mesh
screen for ventilation. While these bins might not be the best if you want to watch
your mice play, they are easy to clean and cheap.
Home-made cages: Some people prefer to build their own cages. This can be
fun to do, but keep in mind that mice love to chew and can squeeze through some
VERY small openings.
