On March 17, 2009, the BC government posted a list of exotic animals that will soon be considered illegal to own or breed within the province of BC. Current owners of these animals MUST apply for a "permit" to be allowed to keep their animals, but will no longer be permitted to breed them.
As you can see, the list includes boa constrictors and many harmless python species. This new legislation will be devastating to many reptile owners in BC. This law was NOT created based on fact, but by fear and misinformation. The original intent of this legislation was to protect BC's own natural wildlife from introduced species.
Here is a letter I wrote to the Province newspaper in response:
How can you help? First, tell everyone you know about this new legislation! Make sure they know the FACTS! Email the Ministry of Environment Contact information: Penny Lloyd 1-250-356-0830 E-mail: pennylloyd@gov.bc.ca
